What to Pack in Your Car Emergency Kit

With the increase in extreme weather events, it is crucial to be prepared every time you hit the road. The recent floods in British Columbia show how important it is to travel with an emergency kit in your car. If an extreme storm or other weather event happens when you are travelling, you should be prepared to stay in your vehicle for up to 72 hours. Be prepared for your next road trip and learn what to pack in your car emergency kit. 🎒

Your emergency kit should consist of non-perishable food, safety, hygiene, and utility items. This article breaks down all of the items you should include in your car emergency kit:

Emergency Kit Supplies: Non-Perishable Food

Energy Bars

High protein and high-calorie energy bars are great items to have in your emergency pack.

Dried fruit has a long shelf life, and it is a light and easy thing to have in your kit.

Whole Grain Crackers

Crackers are a great less perishable alternative to bread.

Canned Tuna

Canned Tuna and other canned meats are high in protein and can be easily stored in your emergency kit. Make sure that you have a can opener and utensils.

Instant oatmeal can be made with just water and are a good source of fibre.

Water Bottles

Pack plastic water bottles so that if they freeze, they do not break. Also, you should replace the water bottles every six months. You will need 12 litres of water per person, enough for drinking, cleaning, and cooking.

Blankets

If you are stuck in your car, that means you will be sleeping in your car. Blankets are another item to keep in your emergency kit. You can purchase standard fleece blankets or an emergency wool blanket.

Extra Set of Clothes, Underwear, Socks, and Shoes

It is always wise to travel with an extra set of clothes, underwear, socks, and shoes.

First Aid Kit

Having a well-stocked first-aid kit is one of the most important items you should carry in your emergency supplies.

Hygiene Products

Since you should be prepared to stay in or near your vehicle for up to 72 hours, you should pack products such as toilet paper, a toothbrush kit, and maybe even wipes.

Sanitary Supplies

Garbage bags, hand sanitizer, and wipes are also good items to keep in your emergency kit.

Utility Tools

Here is a list of utility tools that you should carry with you:

  • Seat Belt Cutter
  • Small Shovel
  • Scarper & Snow Brush
  • Emergency Candle
  • Matches
  • Wind-Up Flashlight
  • Whistle
  • Roadmaps

Items to Keep in Your Trunk

Here is a list of other various items that are important to keep in your trunk:

  • Salt
  • Tow Rope
  • Jumper Cables
  • Fire Extinguisher
  • Road Flares

Trunk Organizers

Consider purchasing a multi-compartment car organizer or a hanging trunk organizer to keep all your supplies organized and in reach.
