EVs Eligible for Provincial and Federal Incentives

When considering purchasing or leasing an electric vehicle (EV), all the available federal and provincial rebate programs can be confusing. Between figuring out how much you can receive to what makes and models are eligible, it is important to understand how to maximize the benefits of purchasing or leasing an EV. We broke down every EV incentive available across Canada in a previous blog post. This article discusses what makes and models of electric vehicles are eligible for federal and provincial EV incentives.

EVs By Make, Model, and Trim that Qualify for Electric Vehicle Federal Incentives

The federal government’s Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles Program (iZEV) offers up to $5,000 to purchase or lease all-electric vehicles that meet the program’s eligibility requirements. The available incentives can also be stacked with provincial incentives, leading to more savings on your purchase or lease of an EV.
In addition, to EV incentives, the federal government offers up to $2,500 for the purchase or lease of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs).

The government also offers a 100% tax-write-off for businesses that purchase eligible electric vehicles. The write-off applies to approved plug-in hybrids and all-electric cars purchased between March 19, 2019, to January 1, 2024. The 100% write-off can be used to $55,000 of the purchase price, plus the federal and provincial sales tax. Businesses can not receive the iZEV incentive and the 100% write-off, only one or the other.

EVs That Qualify for EV Rebates By Province

Most provinces use the same eligibility list and criteria as the federal government’s iZEV Program. Ontario, Quebec, and Newfoundland and Labrador are the only provinces that offer different eligibility standards. See the list below for the eligibility requirements by province. Keep in mind that you can stack all provincial rebates with federal incentives. In addition, some provinces also offer incentives for the purchase or lease of PHEVs. Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba do not offer provincial incentive programs.

British Columbia

British Columbia’s CleanBC Go Electric program eligible vehicle list is the same as the Federal iZEV Program. BC offers up to $3,000 for eligible EVs.

The BC government also offers a PST tax exemption for used all-electric vehicles that have driven at least 6,000kms and have a purchase price of $55,000-$75,000.

Ontario

Ontario Used Electric Vehicle Incentive offers a $1,000 rebate for purchasing a used-all electric vehicle with a re-sale price of under $50,000.

Quebec

Quebec accepts the same vehicles as the Federal iZEV program and some other vehicles listed below. The electric vehicle must be eligible and have an MRSP of less than $60,000 to qualify for Quebec’s EV incentive. Quebec offers up to $8,000 on eligible vehicles.

*Disclaimer: All vehicles listed above under the Federal iZEV program are applicable for Quebec’s EV incentive program. The following listed vehicles are the additional vehicles that Quebec accepts. Please note that the vehicles listed below are not applicable for Federal EV incentive programs.

EV Drivers Save On More Than Just Gas

With gas prices hitting a record high, you may be considering switching to an electric vehicle; the good news is that EV drivers save on more than just gas. Since the Government of Canada announced that it will require all passenger vehicle sales to be zero-emission by 2035, it is no secret that the automotive industry is gearing up to make the switch to electric. Therefore, Canadian consumers should consider electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicle options instead of gas-powered vehicles. Not only can you save on fuel, but you can also receive monetary incentives and pay less for servicing and maintenance with an electric car.
